I know back in the day you could cruise up to the ticket counter & sneak onto a flight that was leaving that day but not full for next to nothing. Times have changed, but I was wondering if anyone knows about any airlines that still do this?

Airtran U is probably the closest thing but is limited to students and is not a last minute purchase option......
Answer :
I know in brisbane Jetstar still offers what some refer to as mystery flights but the cost are usually not much of a discount , much cheaper planning ahead as fares are generally at bargin prices when purchased in advance , If you want a surprise ask a close friend to randomly pick a place , put ticket in sealed envelope and you dont open it until you get to the airport to checkin.
Answer :
No, in fact you're likely to pay much more when you show up at the last minute to purchase a ticket these days.
